In women with dense breasts and increased risk of breast cancer, mammography sensitivity can be as low as 50%; supplementing mammography screening with US will significantly increase cancer detection, although falsepositive rates are also substantially increased. In intermediate-risk women with dense breasts, supplemental US screening is an option.
